History of Lebanon, Pennsylvania

Lebanon was first settled back in 1720. German families with the names Steitz and Light made up the majority of the first European settlers. George Steitz was responsible for the town being laid out in 1753, and it was consequently given the name Steitztown. It was not until 1821, when the town was incorporated as a borough, that the name was changed to Lebanon. Lebanon made strategic use of the nearby Cornwall ore mines, owned primarily by the Coleman family, to grow as an industrial town centered around its iron production. The Union Canal and the Lebanon Valley Railroad were built in 1827 and 1857 respectively. This further increased the growth and success of Lebanon as a newly incorporated borough. The main source of iron production, Cornwall Furnace, ran until 1883. There was also an industry built around Limestone, another mineral abundant in the Lebanon area and other popular items being manufactured such as shoes, carriages, and cigars. Today, Lebanon continues to thrive as an agricultural community.
