History of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania
Elizabethtown was established in 1753, when Barnabas Hughes, an immigrant from County Donegal, Ireland, purchased the land from Thomas Harris. The town is said to be named for Hughes’s wife, Elizabeth. The town was officially incorporated in 1827. In the 1830s, a railroad line was run through the area, aiding in the town’s growth. Elizabethtown’s economy was primarily based on agriculture until the 1900s when it began moving towards more industrial means of production. The Klein Chocolate Company was opened along with various shoe factories throughout the next century. World War II also played a major role in the growth of Elizabethtown. In the second half of the twentieth century following the war, the town’s population doubled. Today, Elizabethtown is home to many businesses including White Oak Mills, a Masterfoods USA plant, Continental Press, and Messick's Farm and Construction Equipment.

- The land that came to be Elizabethtown was originally purchased by Thomas Harris to be used as a trading post. It later became the Bear Tavern, where Harris supplied travelers with local brews.
- Elizabethtown was one of the first communities to settle in Lancaster County. When it was first being laid out, the local boundaries were identified with wooden stakes.
- The Klein Chocolate Company built the Klein Chocolate Co. Athletic Field where they sponsored a semi-pro baseball team in the 1920s.
- Elizabethtown shares many similarities with the town of Letterkenny in County Donegal, Ireland, which is the region from which Elizabethtown’s founding family originated. In 2002, a “Memorandum of Understanding” was signed that encouraged communication and cooperation between the two mirroring towns.
